The concept is quite simple; you simply click on a cookie multiple times in order to create as many cookies as possible. Originally released as a browser game in 2013, this memetic game about building your own cookie empire became dark and strange as the creator continued to add bizarre new features until we ended up with a very fully-featured little game about clicking a big cookie indefinitely.

Cookie Clicker is a game in which you click on cookies. As you might guess, the player receives a cookie for each cookie click. With the cookies acquired, the player can purchase items that aid in the rapid generation of cookies. Initially, the player can purchase cursors that assist in clicking on cookies, but this quickly escalates into the acquisition of cookie farms, factories, mines, and a variety of other bizarre cookie generators. At some point, the game will even allow the player to research upgrades that will increase cookie production. The player can earn achievements for acquiring cookies, cookie generators, and upgrades. Each cookie is designed to make the player feel good about themselves for obtaining them. Each reward requires slightly more effort than the previous one. The reward distribution appears to be exponential, with the first five minutes of gameplay showering the player with feel-good moments. However, as the game progresses, these satisfying moments become fewer and farther between, giving way to a sense of accomplishment and accomplishment. When the player becomes aware of the game’s absurd and addictive nature, the game typically ceases to feel enjoyable to play. The player begins the game with no cookies. On the left of the screen, the player has the option of clicking the Big Cookie, which initially produces one cookie per click. The player can then continue producing cookies until they acquire grandmothers, farms, and mines, among other things. Golden cookies may appear on screen initially every 7 minutes or so, temporarily increasing the number of Cookies per Second. Upgrades can be purchased to increase the number of cookies produced by buildings or to increase the number of cookies produced per second.

After producing 1 billion cookies, the player can begin producing sugar lumps, a secondary currency used to level up buildings, which slightly increases production. Certain structures, such as Farms or Banks, may include a minigame that is unlocked as they are leveled up. Minigames are self-contained small games, such as the Garden and the Stock Market, that can be used to help boost CpS and feature their own upgrades and achievements.

Later in the game, the player can initiate the Grandmapocalypse, an event that begins when the Bingo Centre upgrade is purchased for 1 quadrillion cookies. This event transforms the game's grandmothers into twisted, fleshy creatures. Beginning the grandmapocalypse also results in the spawning of wrinklers, who reduce CpS but can be popped to provide more cookies than they take away. Additionally, golden cookies have morphed into Wrath Cookies, which typically have negative consequences, such as halving cookie production.

After producing a certain number of cookies, the player begins producing heavenly chips, which can be used to ascend. Ascending enables the player to purchase heavenly upgrades, such as a cookie dragon and an upgrade that enables the player to change seasons at will, as well as providing a flat CpS boost proportional to the number of heavenly chips ascended. Ascending also enables the player to enter challenge modes such as Born Again, which recreates the player's beginnings. The ascension system virtually guarantees that the game can be played indefinitely.

The game can then be continued until the player reaches massive cookie totals such as tredecillions and eventually vigintillions.
